Energy and water efficient fusion of heritage cottage and contemporary additions.

The 1870s cottage and modern addition was home to architect John Maitland during a 16-day heatwave in March 2008.

The house remained comfortable inside without any air-conditioning.

Internal temperatures (monitored by UofA) showed minimal fluctuation, while outside temperatures soared.

Thus achieved through integrated use of internal thermal mass, stack and cross ventilation, vertical and horizontal retractable shading and courtyard openings.

Seventeen kilolitres of collected rainwater serve all household water requirements.
