Environmental Education Centre
The Purtinga Centre is an initiative for a Sustainability Education Centre to be developed on the grounds of Cornerstone College.
The school is built on a hill and Purtinga Creek runs through the grounds at the bottom of the site. The low lying ground either side of the creek often gets flooded in winter with the storm water from the school, the neighbouring housing development and the South Eastern Freeway. This then enters Purtinga Creek and causes erosion and pollution problems.
Staff at the school have initiated a drive to develop two wetlands down by the creek to deal with the environmental issues, as well as provide a valuable resource for the environmental education program.
The plan is to relocate a now surplus transportable building down the hill to the site to use as an environmental education classroom facility. It is envisaged that this building will be used as an example of reuse and sustainable architecture.
Energy Architecture has been involved in the master plan for this facility. The project includes considering re-siting, re-fitting, shading devices, extra insulation, extra cladding, a photovoltaic system, rainwater collection and storage, and a dry composting toilet.
