Prairie Hotel

The Prairie Hotel at Parachilna is a much loved Flinders Ranges tourist destination.

More information is available in the Prairie Hotel pdf.

Design of new work considered the Australian Outback character of the existing stone building, and the extremes of semi-desert climatic conditions. Extensions to the original pub building consist of eight bedrooms partially sunk into the earth and protected by a low-pitched hipped roof. Building design provides shading and thermal mass, allows for easterly views of the ranges, and nestles into the flat arid landscape.

In summer, internally cooled air is introduced near floor level and exhausted through roof spaces. This process is reversed in winter. Water is solar heated for use and space heating. Thermal mass of walls and earth keep spaces comfortable at low energy cost. Solar tubes cast natural light to bathrooms and the main passage. Roof overhangs are designed for summer shading while orientation of the building admits sunlight in winter to northern rooms.

Materials were selected for their availability at this remote location, low embodied energy, recycled status, and beauty, in context with the existing structure.
